How To Expand Your Reading Taste

One of the coolest things about having a love for books and an adoration for reading is just how much that does for you. Truly, those who recognize the value of reading open themselves up to a window of knowledge, perspective, and incredible stories. The lessons you learn and the things you read about can shape not only your mind, when it comes to critical thinking in a job or home environment, but also your character. That’s why it’s SO important to have a diverse and open bookshelf. Here are some tips for doing just that!

Firstly, read a book from every genre. I know how easy it is to find a style of book you enjoy and to want to stick with it (which is totally fine), but you’re truly missing out on a wealth of content by not expanding your horizons! Whether it be the most beautiful prose you’ve ever read, the most action-packed story, a biography about the most intriguing person, or the coolest recollection of history, explore other genres! Maybe in between some of your reads, pick up a wild card book, something you’ve never explored. Fantasy, nonfiction, classics, mystery, thriller, the list goes on. Don’t ignore these gems.

Secondly, check out books from all over the world. Whether it be books translated from one language to another or an author from one country that you don’t know much about, opening your mind to new cultures and new ways of seeing the world is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Just imagine how beautiful the stories you’re missing out on just because they’re written in a different language. Find that author from the country you’ve wanted to visit, and take recommendations from natives/native speakers!

Thirdly, support small/local authors! Go to local bookstores instead of buying novels on Amazon, maybe see if anyone is doing book signings, or if there are aspiring people in your area trying to make a name for themselves. Check out social media and search for those people who aren’t always favored by the algorithm or first on your FYP. I have some authors who I'll always stick by, and if they have zero fans, I’m probably dead, but boosting the voices of those in your community is so important. Support those indie authors, and you’ll most likely be rewarded with some great pieces.

Fourthly, read books about topics you’re unsure about. It’s like a little mini research project for yourself. Go into depth about certain topics. Maybe it’s that one historical event that always fascinated you, or that one question that’s always bugged you. Explore it deeper, become an expert on it, and find your answers through books. It’s lowkey a lost art.

To do all of this, utilize everything! Ask your friends and family for their thoughts or their favorites. Talk with your favorite English teacher for suggestions. Go to the library and ask the librarian, ask your followers, and connect with others! Follow those indie authors, check out book blogs and articles, sign up for newsletters, and join a book club. Put every recommendation on your TBR and actively search for new books/topics to change your algorithm and suggestions. Get your hands on everything you can, and I promise you it’ll be worth it.
